As one of the country’s greatest musical cities, the music venues in Austin attract top-name entertainers. The city is also a hotbed of new musical talent, so don’t be surprised if the local acts you see today are soon topping the national charts. Here’s a rundown of the establishments that no serious music fan should miss:
The Continental Club
The Continental Club has been presenting live entertainment since 1955, and is one of Austin’s oldest continually operating nightclubs. It began as a swanky dinner club, but these days rock, country, blues and jazz are on the menu. You can see national touring acts there as well as local musicians who play an infectious blend of roots music. The Continental is open nightly, and music is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Also, check the club’s online calendar for matinee shows on the weekend.
You come to Antone’s Nightclub when you want to hear the blues, and over its 40 year history the place has featured numerous musical legends: Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Ray Charles and Jimmy Reed are among the giants who plied their trade there. And local acts such as the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Stevie Ray Vaughan also performed for adoring fans at Antone’s. The club is open daily for your listening pleasure and you can purchase tickets on Antone’s website.
Elephant Room advertises itself as “365 Nights of Jazz in Austin.” Its calendar of exceptional performers, and welcoming atmosphere, are what keep music fans coming back for more. An “underground” club in the truest sense of the word, it’s situated in the basement of a Congress Ave. building. Patrons say the Elephant is all that a good jazz club should be: intimate and unpretentious, and it has a great sound system. Doors open at 4:00 p.m. weekdays and 8:00 p.m. on the weekend.
